Case Study: Turning Local Search into Bookings for Foto Zone & Santhosh Photography

Home / Blog / Case Study: Turning Local Search into Bookings for Foto Zone & Santhosh Photography

Client overview

Foto Zone was a Chennai photography studio with locations across Chetpet, Mogappair, and Porur, covering weddings, maternity, baby portraits, and business photography. Santhosh Photography was the photographer’s own personal brand, built around saree and catalogue photography for a fashion/retail clientele. We ran both sites as one connected ecosystem for the length of the engagement.

The challenge

A website audit at the start of the engagement found real technical debt: no SSL certificate, outdated PHP, slow page speeds from unoptimized images, missing meta tags and alt text, no analytics or conversion tracking, and a design that hadn’t been modernized. On top of that, the business had almost no visibility for the search terms that actually drive bookings — location-specific, service-specific queries like “maternity shoot in Porur” or “alliance photography.“

What we did

  • Resolved the core technical debt identified in the audit — added SSL, addressed the outdated PHP stack, and optimized page speed (image compression, caching) across both sites

  • Set up and properly configured Google Search Console with updated XML sitemaps for both sites

  • Ran ongoing on-page SEO — h1/meta tag work, page indexing, junk content removal — as a continuous monthly process rather than a one-time fix

  • Interlinked pages across the Foto Zone and Santhosh Photography sites (and external profiles on Medium/Tumblr) to strengthen both domains together

  • Cleaned up and actively managed both Google Business Profiles, correcting locations and linking them to Search Console

  • Ran paid ad campaigns alongside the SEO work

  • Tracked search rankings for the specific local, service-level terms that convert (not just brand-name searches)

The results

The technical issues found in the initial audit were resolved — SSL, outdated PHP, and page speed were all fixed, putting the site on solid technical footing for the SEO work to build on.

Local search rankings moved from invisible to page 1 for the terms that matter for bookings: “maternity shoot in Porur,” “alliance photography,” “maternity/baby portraits in Chetpet,” and “wedding photography in Mogappair” all reached page 1 of Google. Some terms remained a work in progress at the time the engagement ended — “wedding photographer in Porur” was still on page 5–6.

Google Business Profile engagement grew over the engagement:
Foto Zone’s profile interactions were up 109.7% year over year, with direction requests up 203.3%.

Santhosh Photography’s monthly GMB interactions climbed from 39 in July 2024 to 55 in October — though month-to-month it moved both up and down (42 in November), which is normal for a small local-business profile rather than a clean trend line.

For Santhosh Photography’s on-site search performance specifically, the honest picture is mixed rather than a straight growth story: the branded query “santhosh photography” pulled 16 clicks in the Aug 28-day window, 22 in October, and 13 in November — bouncing around rather than climbing steadily. Homepage clicks actually dipped from 33 to 25 month-over-month in November, alongside a modest gain on the silk-saree-photoshoot page (3 → 5 clicks).

At this traffic volume (low double-digit monthly clicks per page), month-to-month swings are expected and shouldn’t be read as a clean trend either way — the real story is the ranking improvements above, not click-volume growth, which stayed thin throughout the engagement.

One number worth being upfront about: phone calls from Foto Zone’s GMB profile actually dropped 32.4% in the same period that direction requests and website clicks rose. That’s not necessarily bad news — it can mean more people were converting straight from search results (getting directions, clicking through to book) rather than calling first — but it’s flagged here rather than smoothed over.

On paid search and display, Google Ads campaigns ran across both the Mogappair and Porur locations (Mar–Apr 2024), generating 1,120 clicks on a combined ₹3,674.71 spend.
Conversion tracking, however, was one of the gaps identified in the original audit, and it showed in the numbers: only one of the six campaigns had working conversion tracking (13 conversions at ₹47.34 each, from the Mogappair Smart campaign); the other five — including a ₹1,187.48 search campaign in Porur — recorded zero conversions despite real spend and clicks, because the tracking wasn’t capturing them, not because nothing happened.

No independent lead log exists for this period to reconstruct the real number. Rather than publish a blended cost-per-lead built on incomplete data, this is presented honestly as it is: getting conversion tracking properly set up was part of the technical groundwork done during the engagement, which is what made accurate performance measurement possible going forward.
